Policies & Procedures
Peters Valley School of Craft is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. This will remain one of our most critial goals, ensuring the school supports all students, with no bias in regard to age, color, disability, gender identification, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, economic status, or veteran status.
and Material Supplies and Fees
Peters Valley supplies certain materials and consumables for each workshop. In addition, students are sent a materials list for their workshop and must bring all of the equipment materials and tools specified in the list. Students are encouraged to bring their own favorite, personal hand tools as appropriate to the workshop as well as their own personal safety gear including ear protection, gloves, safety glasses, face shields (when required) and dust masks. Students should be aware that the availability of specialized materials and tools and equipment is extremely limited in the rural area around Peters Valley.
Peters Valley sets estimated material and studio fees based on supplies requested by the instructor and prices in effect at the time the workshop schedule is established. In a small number of cases, when the price of a material has risen dramatically, material fees will be increased to cover increased costs. Students will be notified of any increased material fee when they are sent their material list for the workshop. Students who use more than the allotted amount of materials will be charged for any overage.
Updated Refunds & Cancellation Policy (4/1/2020)
If a student wishes to cancel a class, except for a $50 cancellation fee and the $30 registration fee, all fees are refundable if notice is given 30 days prior to start of workshop. No refunds will be made after that date. No refunds will be given if a student withdraws after a workshop begins.
If Peters Valley cancels a 2020 workshop due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the student will have the option to: (1) Receive a credit toward a workshop to be used in 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023. This credit is also transferable and may be used by another person (2) Make a contribution to Peters Valley of fees paid, contributions are tax deductible to the extent of the law. (3) Receive a cash refund.
Policies and procedures have been adopted by Peters Valley for the safety and security of all students and staff. Peters Valley maintains a very respectful environment and reserves the right to dismiss any student, without refund, for behavior that is disruptive to the community learning and living environment. There will be no refunds for those dismissed for cause, including no refunds for tuition for missed classes, unused lodging or meals or lab and material fees. Peters Valley may refuse admission to students with a past history of unacceptable behavior.
Peters Valley Craft Center strives to make its programs and facilities accessible to all visitors and participants. Individuals who have questions or would like to or receive additional information about accessibility at Peters Valley, should please contact Kristin Muller, Executive Director and ADA Coordinator at 973-948-5200. At least two weeks notice must be given when requesting special assistance so that we may have time to accommodate needs.
The Studio information page provides a description of the equipment and tools available in each studio. The instructor will determine the equipment and supplies used during your workshop. Not all equipment and supplies are available during each class. Students are responsible for damaged and/or lost equipment and will be required to pay for the cost of repair or replacement, as determined by Peters Valley management.
Hazardous Waste Information
Peters Valley maintains a comprehensive hazardous waste program and asks that you limit the materials you bring on campus to those classified as non-toxic. An environmental fee will be assessed for classes generating hazardous waste and reflected in the materials fee.
Students in each class should discuss the playing of music during workshops and reach a consensus on the time of day, the volume and type of music to be played. Tolerance and consideration is expected of everyone and priority must be given to assuring a workspace conducive to learning for all.
Lockable storage space is not available at Peters Valley School of Craft. Students are encouraged to leave valuables at home.
Safety is of prime importance at Peters Valley. Safety is discussed at the beginning of each workshop. No one may begin using the studio before the safety briefing is completed. Due to the nature of equipment in the studio, no student may use any tool or equipment until he/she has been instructed in its use. You will be informed of any required personal safety gear (including ear protection, gloves, safety glasses, face shields and dust masks) and it will be noted on your student material list if it is not being provided by Peters Valley. In addition, students are encouraged to bring their own personal safety gear. Students will not be permitted to work without appropriate safety gear.
See Studio pages for specific clothing requirements for your studio. Students should wear closed toe shoes. Please be aware that clothing may be permanently damaged when using dyes, abrasives, glazes, wood finishes, and other chemicals and should dress accordingly.
There are no computers available to students, however there is password protected wireless internet available in some dorms and studios. You may bring your laptop and we will gladly provide you with access (password). However, downloading of videos, streaming music and/or large files highly discouraged as signal strength can be an issue due to our remote location. The Public Libraries in Milford and Frankford are the closest available public access to computers (8 to 10 miles).
Most cell phones are usable at Peters Valley. However, we are in a hilly, rural environment and service may be spotty. Students are asked to TURN OFF their cell phones during workshops.
Alcohol & Drugs
Alcohol is not permitted while working in the studios. The legal drinking age in New Jersey is 21 and underage drinking will not be tolerated. The use of illegal drugs at Peters Valley is prohibited.
