Have fun printing patterns on fabric using centuries old block printing methods in a contemporary studio setting. Design and carve your own blocks (or bring some that are already carved) while learning the basics of natural dyes such as mordanting protein and cellulosic fiber and mixing natural dye print paste designed block printing. Techniques learned in this workshop are easy to use and can be transferred into a home setting to continue exploring on your own. Everyone will bring home several block printed fabrics to enjoy! Christina Roberts is a Master Printer and educator specializing in contemporary art making practices with 30 years of experience at The Fabric Workshop and Museum and as an adjunct faculty member in the Fiber Material Studies Department at Tyler School of Art where she teaches a course in contemporary natural dye practice. She is co-founder of Marafiki Arts, a 501(c)3 community project in rural Kenya working with women’s groups to intersect culture, commerce and collaboration to promote sustainability. www.marafikiarts.org
