Learn carving with the use of hand and power tools through the creation of a wall hung, relief sculpture that opens. You will also gain an understanding of wood types, grain, and finishing.The shrine or altar cabinet motif will be used to depict any subject matter or communicate an idea. The closed position, and the reveal of the inside, offers opportunity to use all surfaces in juxtaposition and relationship to one another – and overall. Everyone will make one finished piece in this session so bring an idea or find it in the wood. Beginner and Beyond

Thomas Sterner is an artist, master printmaker, and sculptor. He revels in understanding how things are made, and enjoys the discovery process of making, and sharing his knowledge with others. His artwork seeks to elevate nature or ordinary objects to a revered stature, through the use of motifs and imagery to make people think and smile.
